The Comedy of Errors is being directed this year by Audrey Rumsby, our alumni and a professional actor. It is an excellent play for introducing anyone to Shakespeare. It is also an excellent use of Audrey’s talent for comedy.
Red Velvet is a exciting opportunity for our alumni and experienced players to perform a topical and modern play. This award-winning play tells the little-known story of Ira Aldridge, the 19th-century African-American actor who played Shakespeare’s Othello, Macbeth, Shylock, and Lear to great acclaim all over Europe. Nathan Sandoval returns to us, playing Ira Aldridge.
For the first time ever, San Jose Youth Shakespeare will be producing TWO plays this summer, one of which was written not only in this century but this decade!
Stay tuned for details about The Comedy of Errors and Red Velvet, coming to The Historic Hoover Theatre August 9-14.
Red Velvetis the story of the first production of Othello in London with a black actor in the leading role. Premiered 2012 and set in 1833, the same year that Britain’s Slavery Abolition Act was passed, Red Velvet dramatizes a gripping story with implications for today. Our first production of a modern play, San Jose Youth Shakespeare’s Red Velvet features Nathan Sandoval as Ira Aldridge, supported by a cast of some of the most experienced members and alumni of our company. Details of show dates and times for both Red Velvet and The Comedy of Errors coming soon!
