Review of The Tempest

From Audrey Wong’s “Bucket List” April Edition

“Apr 25: San Jose Youth Shakespeare performed “The Tempest” at The Historic Hoover Theatre in San Jose. I thought my back would force me to leave at intermission, but the play was so good I stayed to the end. Children performing full-length Shakespeare plays – wow!”

and continuing by comparing us favorable to OSF

“…In San Jose Youth Shakespeare, I see the same intensity of artistic vision, deep respect for the genre, love of language, hard work, dedication, and joy. What impresses me most is the company’s adaptability and ingenuity to “make do” with what they have while keeping Shakespeare intact, accessible, and highly enjoyable. Envisioning Ariel as seven (yes, seven) young girls darting here and there like a school of fish; turning Caliban into a two-headed monster; and creating a lurking alter-ego for Prospero – these were marks of genius. Director Bob Rumsby and his troupe deserve high praise.

“We have a number of stellar arts groups right here in our own back yard. We need to find and support them!”

We are very glad Audrey Wong enjoyed our performance and could have so many kind words to describe the work of our youth and our Director, Bob Rumsby.
