Join Youth Shakes as we kick off our 10th anniversary season with a stirring production of Shakespeare’s beloved tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. This story of feuding families and young love permeates our popular culture, but have you seen Shakespeare’s original version? Come experience Romeo and Juliet as it was meant to be: performed live, “as it hath been often (with great applause) plaid publiquely.” Our young company’s rendition of this classic work emphasizes the youth of the protagonists. Romeo, Juliet, and several supporting roles are played by boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16, while some of our older members play their parents, the Prince, Mercutio, and Tybalt. Sword and buckler and rapier and dagger fights are featured in the play, and a happy band of servants provides some comic relief. At the Historic Hoover Theatre May 1-5.
